This training is designed to help you build confidence and skill in engaging with individuals who may be navigating complex systems, including child welfare and criminal or juvenile justice systems, and/or managing challenges related to mental illness or substance use. You’ll explore the common barriers these Member’s face, learn strategies to build trust and connection, and practice applying trauma-informed, culturally responsive approaches across a variety of real-world scenarios.
After completing this training, participants will be able to:
- Describe the core principles of person-centered engagement across all Member groups.
- Identify common barriers faced by system involved and behavioral health-affected Members.
- Apply appropriate language and engagement strategies that reduce stigma and convey respect.
- Demonstrate effective responses to real-world scenarios using empathy, cultural humility, and awareness of systemic content.
- Recognize how stigma, bias, and systemic trauma may influence Member behavior or communication style, and adjust engagement approaches accordingly.
